“When I called the Polk County School Board office to inquire about taking my child out of the public school and homeschooling her, the person informed me that I will be required to bring my child’s portfolio into her at the homeschool office once every month to be reviewed,” a mother told me on the phone last Friday. I was so shocked to hear this that I almost dropped the phone. I was with several very experienced homeschool educators and home education support professionals at the time of the phone call, and everyone was shocked, though not surprised.<\/p>\n

Yes, most certainly the superintendent of the county, or their representative, can send a parent a 15 day, written notice to bring their child’s portfolio to the county school board office to be reviewed for any reason, or no reason, if they like. BUT, it will be determined whether the homeschool student’s program\/portfolio is in compliance with the FL Home Education statute requirements, or not. If the student’s program\/portfolio is not in compliance with the FL Home Education statutes, I have read in the Florida Home Education statutes that the student would be put on a year probation, to allow the homeschooling family time to come into compliance with FL Home Education statute requirements. Then the Superintendent, homeschool representative, will review the portfolio again at the end of the year. The superintendent, or their representative, giving notice to review the homeschool student’s portfolio, would not be done, or required, monthly!<\/p>\n

The crazy misinformation given by SOME county school board personnel, even by the home education department personnel, is one of the reasons that I decided to get involved with homeschooling families through annual evaluations, standardized testing, and consulting. I have been homeschooling since 1999, and the first homeschool evaluations I did was when I called the Florida State Department of Education to make sure I knew what was required of me as an evaluator. I have been getting my instructions, and questions answered, directly from the FL State Dept. of Education ever since.<\/p>\n

Another major reason I decided to get involved with homeschooling families through annual evaluations, standardized testing, and consulting, is when I heard about the excessive fees charged for what should be a simple portfolio review. An evaluator doing a portfolio review is only required to review work samples from the homeschooling student’s portfolio and determine if the student is progressing or not. A conversation with the student is stated in the FL statute to be done in context with the portfolio review, though there are no certain questions required to be asked, nor responses to be given. Just a conversation with the homeschool student. The Activity\/reading log does not show substantial evidence of progress at all. The activity\/reading log is mainly for the documentation that the superintendent may send for a review of the student’s homeschooling program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
