Does My Homeschooled Child Need A High School Diploma To Go To College?
The county school board administrator told me that my child needs a FL state high school diploma if my child wants to, “go to college.” The administrator specifically said that my child, “will have to have a state diploma to be accepted by any college, or university.”
The previous statement is what many county school board administrators, and most of the virtual school customer service personnel, tell parents, especially homeschool parent. This is so untrue!
Does my homeschooled child need a high school diploma to go to college?
No! By Florida law, no! However, since you are the “school official” you can create and sign your homeschooled student’s high school diploma.
A diploma is a document that bears record of the completion of a course of study. As the parent, you prescribe your child’s course of study and you can present a diploma that indicates he or she has successfully completed it. When creating a diploma, include at minimum the following items:
- statement that it is a high school diploma;
- name of student;
- statement that the student finished the program of secondary education required of him or her;
- signature of the person who verifies that the student finished the program; and
- date the diploma was issued or signed.
