Homeschooling in Florida

In Florida we are privileged to have the freedom to homeschool our children, educating them as is truly best; taking them to the most wonderful places, doing the most exciting activities, experiencing the most lovely days, just being together and learning together, even if it is just in our front yard, or in our kitchen. We rise from our beds, not to rush out the door, jumping on the bus, or into the car to race into rush hour traffic. We roll out of our beds to read together and smell the cinnamon and honey, or the garlic and butter, or even just peanut butter and bananas. It smells delicious when we can just be together, and enjoy each other throughout the morning, and days.

I missed my family this morning, as I took the opportunity given to help at one of our county elementary schools, filling in for a teacher whose child was ill, so that she had to stay home with her little girl. She HAD to stay home with her little girl? What a “blessing in disguise,” ay? Whether she realized what a blessing it was or not, I know not, but I am sure she enjoyed staying home with her daughter. Did she enjoy it enough to quit going to school everyday, sitting with other people’s children, to stay with her own daughter, and be a truly significant part of her daughter’s life?

As I was conducting classes and observing the children for the day, I thought of the radio news stories I heard on the way to school; childhood diabetes becoming out of epidemic proportions in the past decade and children bullying each other becoming out of control.

I then recalled being at the same elementary school last Friday and having to break up a fight between two first graders. It was a true “knock-down, drag-out fight.” I could hardly believe my eyes. They both claimed the other started it by pushing them; a little 6 year old white boy rolling in the dirt with his little black counter part. “In the day” we would have become best friends and left arm in arm, or at least by the next day. Not now. the parents were in the office spurring them on; “You don’t let anyone push you around, Tommy.” Only to hear, quietly from across the office “Daniel, you don’t have to put up with that racist garbage.” Boy, was I happy to be home and hear my little girls argue, only to hear their little brother urging them not to argue.

I am a home schooling parent since 1999 and a FL Certified Teacher since 1996. I am also a Standardized Test Administrator and Educational Advisor.
I spent 12 years full time teaching in the classrooms of International Schools in South America & Europe, as well as, the public and private schools in the U.S.A. I spent 10 years conducting Educational Workshops, Team Building and part time teaching. I have been homeschooling our children since 1999.
